Revolutionary Techniques in Garden Room
about project
This 24m² garden room was designed as a fully functional, self-contained living space that blends Scandinavian simplicity with Irish practicality. The building sits on a floating insulated concrete foundation, ensuring long-term stability and excellent thermal performance.
The external walls are built using 124mm SIP panels with an additional 30mm PIR insulation layer, achieving an overall U-value of approximately 0.16 W/m²K. The walls are finished with a double-batten ventilated facade clad in northern spruce, factory-painted for weather protection and a natural aesthetic that complements the garden setting.
The flat roof consists of 174mm SIP panels covered with a Firestone EPDM rubber membrane, offering a U-value near 0.17 W/m²K and long-term waterproof reliability.
Inside, 124mm SIP internal walls were used to create a compact 2.5m² bathroom, neatly integrated into the floor plan. The space is divided into two practical zones — one side featuring a kitchen and dining area with glazed doors for natural light and access to the outdoors, and the other side functioning as a living/sleeping area, perfect for relaxation or guest accommodation.
The layout makes this garden room ideal as a guest house, home studio, or compact living unit, combining insulation efficiency, modern design, and low running costs. Every element — from the SIP structure to the natural timber cladding — was chosen with sustainability, comfort, and longevity in mind.
